Class of 2019

Emma Buckhout is pursuing a joint Master of Public Affairs and Master of Arts in International Relations at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University to deepen her multidisciplinary studies of immigration and refugee policy and administration. She ultimately hopes to work to educate policymakers and build more just and sustainable U.S. immigration and refugee policies, with a focus on Mexico and Central America.

Interested in Latin America and social justice work from a young age, Emma earned an honors degree in International Relations and certificate in Spanish from the University of Pennsylvania. She deepened her love for Mexico while volunteering for two years in Mexico City with Incarnate Word Missionaries. In Mexico City, she worked on youth development within a local parish, as well as volunteering with the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity, which laid the foundation for her work in Washington, DC. Emma interned with the Latin America Working Group (LAWG) and then worked for NDN and the New Policy Institute’s 21st Century Border Program before returning to LAWG fulltime. Emma served as LAWG’s Mexico, Migrant Rights, and Border Program Associate and Fundraising Associate for three and a half years, working with Congress, the Administration, grassroots activists, and civil society partners in Mexico on human rights issues in Mexico. In her spare time, Emma is an avid yoga practitioner and teacher
